I’m going home!Â After more than four years living in Kuching, I’ll be making a short trip home for a little vacation.Â Â It’s for three weeks only, from the end of May to the middle of June.Â Â I fly into Chicago to see some old friends and then wend my way to Detroit after that.Â I’m looking forward to it, but it is bittersweet nonetheless.Â I can only bring along my two oldest children.Â The three youngest will remain behind with my very pregnant wife.
Since those kids represent my only tangible achievements over these last few years, it’s a shame I can’t take them along.Â I’ll be posting along the way, so stay tuned.

Once, for instance, we delivered a cartload of dead leaves to the adolescent chickens, to "stimulate their instincts," and Dr. Greg suggested that we observe them. We sat in silence for ten minutes (that’s a third of a TV show, for most of us) watching the chickens stand still and nervously eye the leaves. "Well," he said eventually, "We can come back later."

So here we have the paradox of anti-consumerism. The major remedy of the consumer society which has been adopted almost without question by the Left and by the radicals more generally has been one of the most powerful forces driving consumer capitalism.
